Vows in the Valley: Adventure Elopements in Ouray, Colorado

This photo essay, featuring the stunning work of Aubrey Fletcher of Aubrey Beth Photography, celebrates the spirit of adventure elopements in Ouray, Colorado, a place where love and nature unite under the towering peaks of the San Juan Mountains. Like the cascading waterfalls and rugged trails, these moments embody the raw beauty and boundless freedom of choosing your own path. As vows echo against the alpine backdrop, the journey becomes a testament to love's resilience and the shared courage to explore life’s wildest horizons together.

Sunrise Is Special

Sunrise elopements hold a special place in my heart, and here’s why: Fewer people, which means we often have the mountains all to ourselves. And the light—oh, the light! Watching it gently spill over the mountain peaks is nothing short of magical. It’s a truly unforgettable experience and one I’m always thrilled to witness.

Moody is Better

Don't shy away from rainy or moody weather—it offers a breathtaking backdrop for your wedding photos. The dramatic clouds act as a natural light diffuser, softening the light and eliminating harsh shadows. It’s the perfect setting to create wedding images that are as unique and unforgettable as your love story.

An Alpine Start

Our day began at 3:30 a.m. with an exciting 4-mile hike to our destination. The early start was totally worth it as we arrived with plenty of time to catch the breathtaking alpine glow on the surrounding peaks as the sun rose. Kristy and Adam then had the sweetest picnic with a stunning view of the crystal-clear lake below. Afterward, we explored the area, snapping playful portraits as we went. Early mornings like this are always an adventure worth waking up for!

Hard to Choose

Picking a favorite spot in the San Juan Mountains is almost impossible! While every place has its charm, I can’t help but fall in love with an alpine lake surrounded by towering peaks. I mean, who could blame me, right?

The Perfect Witness

Absolutely! Your Dog Can "Sign" Your Marriage License in Colorado! Did you know that in Colorado, having your dog act as your “witness” and even “sign” your marriage license is legal? It’s a quirky and fun way to include your furry friend on your big day!

In most states, witnesses are required to sign the marriage license as proof the ceremony took place. But in Colorado, there's no such rule—giving couples the freedom to get creative with commemorating their union. Many couples seize the opportunity to have their beloved pets stand in as witnesses, making their ceremony even more memorable.

And it's not just dogs—any family pet can be your witness! Cats, birds, bunnies... if they're part of your family, they’re welcome to join in. All you need to do is get your Colorado marriage license for $30 from your local county clerk’s office, fill out the necessary details, leave the witness lines blank (or let your dog leave a paw print!), and return the completed license within 35 days.

How’s that for a paws-itively adorable way to make your wedding day even more special?

Alpine Settings

High alpine turquoise lakes are every bit as magical as they sound! Sure, getting there takes a little effort, but the stunning views and photos are absolutely worth it. While many couples opt for a more relaxed wedding day, these jaw-dropping spots don’t come easy. Are you up for the adventure?

A Helping Hand

Navigating rocky terrain can be a challenge, but it’s those moments—helping each other through life’s obstacles and climbing up rocks for those epic shots—that truly highlight what makes marrying your best friend so special.
